About

Zou Zhao:

"While my parents are of Hu Bei origins, I migrated with my family to Singapore when I was 6 years old. My interest in language is a direct result of my experiences of the Chinese diaspora in various cities I have resided. Taking departure from a specific interest in the gap between English and Chinese, my various works examine the role of language in the neocolonial distribution of knowledge today, under the signifying regimes of globalisation. I take the voice, as a metonymy for the body, to raise questions surrounding a perceived notion of ‘autonomy’ within language."

"I have presented internationally (London, Singapore, China, Korea, Paris, Zurich) including Luma Foundation 2015, Centre Pompidou 2015, Artesonje Centre 2015, Camden Art Centre 2013, UCL Art Museum, 2013, no.w.here art space 2014, and Chinese Visual Festival 2014. I have also co-curated The strange impression of seeing things for the first time at Art Pavilion in London in 2013, and is the recipient of Berenice Goodwin Award for Performance from Slade School of Fine Art, UCL in 2013."
