Rebecca Riggs-Bennett (Bec) is a theatrical sound artist (design, composition, spoken word), performance maker and emerging director. Sound is inherently immersive – the form guides audiences into imagined worlds and created environments. Bec uses sound as a dramaturgical device that facilitates narratives and has supported many other practitioner’s concepts with this focus.
Bec is interested in gender-based structures that are complex or not easily identifiable in conversation, and yet underpin the behaviour and actions of present society. The performance-based work Bec has been recently manifesting is drawn from their experience as a demigirl, and the celebratory embracement of their masculinity which has been cultivated through physical endurance. Training in the combat sport of boxing has opened broader conversations around safety, defence, violence, and power which constantly link back to the patriarchal and colonial systems humankind matures within.
