Raised by an “old school punk” dad and a “new romantic” mum, designer Indigo Newbery-Chunn got her start at 15 as a sewing apprentice, screen printer and pattern maker, blossoming into a rigorous design practice built on years of seamstressing and a passion for costume design at its performative edge. Her brand Calli Comical, named after a character in Martin Scorcese’s thriller “Casino”, specialises in historically-informed, highly dramatic silhouettes. Her expansive palette reflects a range of references including the films of Kenneth Anger and Derek Jarman, 19th Century opera couture and liturgical dress.
