PRESENTED BY PERFORMANCE SPACE AND SYDNEY UNIVERSITY

Sydney University and Performance Space are working in collaboration to deliver the LIVE EXCHANGE delegate program - a series of online events and encounters designed to facilitate connection and exchange in these distant times between arts sector colleagues.

This program seeks to build new connections between like-minded organisations, artists and producers working in experimental practice. The program takes place virtually from Wednesday 20 October to Wednesday 27 October and includes an array of digital content and networking opportunities dotted amongst the digital offerings of the festival.

Please note you will be responsible for booking your own tickets to LIVE NOW performances but as a Live Exchange delegate you will have an exclusive code to access discounted tickets and access to all delegate special events.

APAM PRESENTS: THE FUTURE OF DIGITAL

For some artists and presenters, going digital has primarily been a way to make it through pandemic times. But for others - particularly those working with experimental, emerging and hybrid forms - digital engagement is here to stay, and we're just getting started. In this conversation we'll hear from colleagues across different regions who are committing to digital presentation as a way of working into the future.

Moderators: Catherine Jones and Jeff Khan

Speakers: Natalie Hennedige, Heather Redfern, Cat Jones, Justin Shoulder

SUPPORTING EXPERIMENTAL INTERCULTURAL PRACTICE & PRESENTATION

Independent Producers, Jala Adolphus, Dr Sadiah Boonstra and Freya Waterson work across countries to develop, present and tour contemporary intercultural projects and experimental performance. We are mindful of the disconnect often experienced by audiences between what they are seeing and experiencing and the social, cultural and political contexts in which artists develop their work.

Through a series of discussions with artists, presenters and producers we are facilitating a collaborative dialogue that unpacks some of the challenges arising from current commissioning and presentation models. Like many peers across Asia, we are developing new thinking and strategies to generate more meaningful engagement between artists, presenters and audiences across cultures.

One aspect of this research is developing a methodology through which artists can create material that sits alongside a presented work, providing embedded, accessible and shareable context. We refer to this as ‘expanded materials’, produced in parallel to the creation of new performance work, and giving audiences the opportunity to ‘go deeper’ by accessing content that has been curated by the artist, ensuring their voice and cultural perspective is elevated, rather than interpreted by a presenting organisation.

Through this session at Liveworks, we will provide a platform to hear about new approaches from across the region, discuss challenges and, through a short workshop, collectively interrogate opportunities for developing these ideas into the future.
