About the Experimental Choreographic Program (ECP)

Presented by Performance Space and Critical Path, the Experimental Choreographic Program supports the development of innovative, bold and experimental approaches to choreography. We are seeking artists that explore experimental and/or interdisciplinary approaches to choreography and movement practice in innovative, rigorous and engaging ways.

Since 2016, we have supported independent and experimental choreographic practice through the Experimental Choreographic Residency, a two-week residency at The Drill Hall. This residency for an artist or collective offers financial, production, technical and creative support. You can find more information on previous recipients here.

This year, we are excited to be expanding this offering to include a new element for NSW-based artists: a one-week Choreographic Lab. This is an opportunity for a small group of artists to participate in a facilitated lab. The artists will connect with experienced practitioners, explore their work in a collaborative setting, and expand their choreographic skills and techniques.

Together, the Experimental Choreographic Residency and the Experimental Choreographic Lab make up the Experimental Choreographic Program. At the conclusion of this program, all participants will have the opportunity to share their work in a public showing. On top of applying for the Experimental Choreographic Residency, NSW-based artists can elect to be considered for the Experimental Choreographic Lab.

Assessment Criteria and Eligibility

We are inviting applications to this program from artists with an experimental choreographic practice, or who are using choreography in experimental ways in their practice. Applications will be assessed for clarity and integrity of concept and process, the form the project takes, achievability of the project, and the urgency and relevance of the project to experimental performance practice in Australia today. Applications for the two-week Experimental Choreographic Residency are invited from around Australia and Aotearoa (New Zealand). Only artists residing in New South Wales are eligible for the one-week Experimental Choreographic Lab.
