A surge of live events, installations and digital performances will reconnect audiences with a presentation of compelling, vibrant new work from Australia and the Asia-Pacific.

This year the festival returns to its home at Carriageworks, and expands back out to a 10-day program of awe-inspiring new art and performance.

With Liveworks 2022, Performance Space broadens its commitment to supporting artists to create progressive, risk-taking, new experimental work and for audiences to experience the latest and most exciting new contemporary performance. Bringing artists from across Australia, Asia and the Pacific—including Singapore, Taiwan, Japan, New Zealand, the Pacific and more—to Sydney.

Now in its eighth year, Liveworks 2022 follows two years of Covid-impacted programming which transformed the way that the Festival was curated, including the introduction of an innovative digital program which debuted to acclaim in 2020. This year, the Liveworks program combines the best of these new programming developments with a spirited return to presenting full-scale physical works across the Carriageworks spaces—including a range of accessible online events as well as an exhilarating array of in-person installations, performances and experiences created by some of our most visionary contemporary artists.

Jeff Khan, Artistic Director and CEO, Performance Space said:
‘In 2020 & 21, the pandemic brought us to transform the model of Liveworks. We found new ways to present experimental art and as a result, we reached new audiences across Australia and the world. This year, we make a joyous return to presenting large-scale works at Carriageworks as well as continuing to curate digital performances that reach beyond our walls to audiences across the globe. We look forward to Liveworks being a welcoming and remarkable gathering point where people can experience astonishing performances, immersive installations, exciting new music and connect with surprising and inspiring new ideas.”

The compelling program for Liveworks 2022 includes newly-commissioned performances and installations, artist-led conversations, and digital presentations, offering a glimpse into the future of experimental art.

Liveworks Festival of Experimental Art 2022 will incorporate three program streams:
LIVE FUTURES: A brand-new series of artist-led conversations about the future.
LIVE DREAMS: A dynamic platform for works-in-progress, exploring the art of tomorrow.
LIVE NOW: A program of new experimental art, expanding our perspective on what’s possible.

Liveworks Festival of Experimental Art 2022 will offer audiences the opportunity to experience art that affirms our capacity for renewal, wonder and transformation.
