THRESHOLD (11th June 2022)
Curated by Victoria Spence
‘Works that consider arrival, passing through and beginning anew. That meet the 'what if' and 'if only' questions, that may bring us to the end of what we know’
In curating this program for Live Dreams, I have considered how artists continue to meet the conditions of our existence. What opportunities, responsibilities and experiences the making of and receiving of art practice produces. Interwoven through these musings, the literal definition of Threshold: 'the magnitude or intensity that must be exceeded for a certain reaction, phenomenon, result, or condition to occur or be manifested', offers us a provocation to yield into those places that our already existent knowledge systems cannot take us.
Artists
Aunty Rhonda Dixon will provide Welcome to Country
Aunty Rhonda Dixon Grovenor is a Gadigal, Bidjigal and Yuin elder who works in healing ceremony. She is a much loved and respected member of her communities who works tirelessly for human rights, social justice, healing mother earth and sea and redressing inequities of power and wealth across society.
Tom Isaacs, Shivah

X4NDR4 aka Josie Alexandra, inversion {P01~L14CG}
A digital performance developed whilst on residency at the Ionion Center of Art and Culture, Kefalonia, Greece. This work centres artist methodologies informed by Josie's neurodiverse and trans non-binary ways of being developed as part of their ongoing project; politic of interiority // life’s a computer game, {P01~L14CG}.
Charlotte Farrell, Roundup
Roundup is a performance lecture that excavates questions surrounding death, the body, and their relationship to environmental ecosystems. Part autobiography, part musings on Ancient archeological history, Roundup is an elegiac lecture-lamentation that reclaims the theatrical potential in mourning through performative ritual.
Joanna Cook with Yin-Chi Lee and Tehana Piggott, Expanding Flesh
Taking inspiration from Bobbi Jene Smith’s work ‘A study on Effort,’ Expanding Flesh explores how far we can push ourselves – what is our threshold? ...is this really the limit or does our fleshly capacity continually expand? What if we push too far? If only we went a little further.
Amber Liberté, The Mycelium Rebirth
The Mycelium Rebirth will be a site specific, immersive, multidisciplinary work exploring the boundaries between: Live-sculpture, ecological sculpture (using plant matter), film, virtual reality, and olfactory art.
ṈìkṈáK aka Nick Wishart, MotoLux
MotoLux is a new audio visual surround sound performance by NikNaK that uses the new motion controller Round Sounds to create and command a stunning musical set with audio reactive visuals. The audience will experience this performance in an immersive 4 channel surround space with the performer at the centre.
Sēini F. Taumoepeau, Tangata Tapu 2022 (Sacred/Forbidden/Secret People/Mankind 2022)
An Ancient Oceanic chant intersects with contemporary life. Embodying Deity: A re-discovery of what is remembered of a forgotten performative ceremony distilled in living memory of the Mōana.
Performance Space’s LIVE DREAMS is a platform for artists to share works-in-progress and ideas in development in a dynamic and responsive environment. LIVE DREAMS takes place both in-theatre at Carriageworks and digitally via our live streaming channel, Live On The Line. This platform offers us an exciting glimpse into current developments in experimental art, creating a crucible for experimentation and conversation.
This June, Performance Space will hold a special edition of LIVE DREAMS, inviting artists to present works-in-progress that imagine radical futures. Our three guest curators—Talia Smith, Joel Bray and Victoria Spence—have themed each stream with a powerful forward-looking provocation, inviting us to interrogate the role of art in shaping and reshaping our collective future in an ever-shifting world. What agendas do we want to advance and how might art dispel myths, illuminate concerns or provoke radical visions?
