PSpace has championed and supported independent choreographic practice since the 80s. Initiatives such as Antistatic and Next Steps provided necessary platforms for independent choreographic practice. The 2023 Liveworks program presents a suite of works—new and from the archive—from some of Australia’s most well-respected and influential choreographers.
Lucy Guerin Inc - Robbery Waitress on Bail: Witness the gripping revival of Lucy Guerin’s acclaimed contemporary dance piece, Robbery Waitress on Bail. This captivating duet takes inspiration from the pages of Melbourne’s tabloids—its starting point was the report of a waitress who acts as a hostage in a robbery while her fiancé holds a knife to her throat in the all-night cafe where she works.
Branch Nebula - Sentimental Reason: In the summer of ’99, a newspaper article described a man who stole a horse from its field and bound its legs. He then stripped off his clothes and had sex with the horse in broad daylight. He was caught in the act by two passing police as he was clearly in view from an adjoining road. The police did not know what to charge him with.
Nelly & Marlo Benjamin - MurMur: MurMur explores the unspoken. The inherent knowing we share as mother and daughter is intertwined with parallels in identity and physiological makeup. Through highlighting hair as environment, connection, and bonding, we abstract and archive the body and movement into the suggestions of the past and future.
