For the first time, Liveworks Festival of Experimental Art will feature an experimental sound program co-presented by Bombay Sapphire – Sonic Nightcap. Program Producer Katie Winten shares her thoughts:
Performance Space has a rich history of championing interdisciplinary risk-taking artists, and this program focuses on the musicians and performers whose work straddles multiple genres and contexts.
The intersection between art and music forms the foundation of this program, with many artists whose music appears in contemporary performance, visual art, video and dance. Each Sonic Nightcap artist brings a unique nightly experience – lyrically, sonically, through movement onstage and off. Some sets are tender and contemplative, some will create a sweaty, heaving dancefloor.
The artists in this program work hard to create space for marginalised voices in music – Female Wizard has fought for visibility and representation of trans artists across the Melbourne music scene, ELSZ’s forthcoming album is dedicated to victims and survivors of gender violence and DJ Sovereign Trax promotes Aboriginal music through energising decolonisation conversations.
Whether it’s a queer dancefloor experience of transcendence, introspective melodic pop or experimental R&B, Sonic Nightcap is both hard-hitting and playful, offering audiences a diverse listening experience grounded in experimentation.
