ABOUT THE EXPERIMENTAL PERFORMANCE FELLOWSHIP
We are inviting applications from NSW-based artists and groups/collectives for our Experimental Performance Fellowship. The Fellowship is a year-long, self-directed program of research and development supported by Performance Space.
We want to understand how applicants’ work speaks to their contemporary social, cultural, political, environmental, geographic, economic and/or technological context, extends the boundaries of artistic practice and form, and why an opportunity like the Fellowship would be beneficial to them at this time.
WHAT THE FELLOWSHIP OFFERS
- $30,000AUD to support a NSW-based artist or collective to undertake research and development for a new project, body of work, or a program of professional development between June 2025 and June 2026;
- Curatorial and administrative support from Performance Space to assist this work, and to help plan for the next steps after the Fellowship period;
- Invitations to Performance Space programs and partner events across the year;
- Participation in the Liveworks Delegates Program to afford national and international networking opportunities;
- Access to the Performance Space office as a hotdesking space, if useful;
- The opportunity to present work with Performance Space, if mutually agreed.
- Artists residing and working in NSW for the last twelve months at the time of applying (if are applying as a group or collective, at least one member of the group must reside in NSW);
- Artists who have a practice in experimental, form-pushing, new form, inter- or anti-disciplinary, or risk-taking performance work (this criteria is self-identified - applicants will be asked to articulate this aspect of their practice);
- Artists can be at any stage of their career, and working in any form or medium, provided your proposed project or program has a basis in a performance practice or a strong element of performance within it.
HOW THE APPLICATIONS ARE ASSESSED
- Via a panel of industry peers, including one representative from Performance Space and two independent or artist industry assessors.
CRITERIA THAT APPLICATIONS WILL BE ASSESSED BY
- Quality of artistic practice - demonstrated track record of developing and presenting strong contemporary performance work, and strength of the proposed idea or project;
- Experimentation or risk within proposed Fellowship project - the extent to which an applicant’s practice demonstrates experimentation with form, content, material, or any other way they are able to articulate this approach within their practice;
- Clarity and viability of proposal - the robustness and feasibility of the plan put forward for the program or project;
- Timeliness - urgency/relevance of the proposal to its contemporary context, value to the artist at this time, and the potential of an applicant’s practice to grow through this specific opportunity, at this time.
