Singaporean Daniel Kok and Australian Luke George have sustained a collaborative working relationship for a decade. Since they met in an artist residency in Sydney in 2014, they have created performance works that have been supported by numerous partners in Singapore, Australia and other countries across 4 continents.
Known most for their shared practice in rope bondage, they describe their artistic practice as an exploration in relational politics: Ropes is a material for understanding social bonds not just between two persons but also the wider community. Daniel and Luke look at the complex web of social connections between people to discover how we can better observe ourselves and one another when we gather for a shared experience.
Celebrating the 10th year anniversary of their trans-local collaboration, ENTANGLEMENTS acknowledges all the people, places and ideas that have been a part of Daniel and Luke’s artistic journey. Accompanied by luxuriant images of their works documented by different photographers over the years, ENTANGLEMENTS features writings by critical thinkers based in different parts of the world to reflect on the key ideas behind Luke and Daniel’s works. The essays cover topics pertaining artistic collaboration, queering performance, participation, social engagement, and how ‘community’ can be defined.
