Performance Space is Australia's leading organisation for the development and presentation of experimental art. Emerging 40 years ago in response to artists’ articulated desire to explore and investigate new forms of art, Performance Space has consistently identified, nurtured and presented new directions in contemporary practice. We champion risk, experimentation, and new modes of creative expression. Performance Space continues to evolve and renew to meet the needs of the independent sector and explore new models for developing and presenting the most critical and important new work.

Position Description:

The Chair of the Board plays a pivotal role in guiding Performance Space towards its strategic objectives and ensuring the organisation’s continued growth and impact within the arts community. The Chair provides leadership, governance, and strategic direction to the Board of Directors, working closely with fellow board members, staff, and stakeholders to fulfil Performance Space's mission and vision.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership and Governance:

  • Provide visionary leadership to the Board of Directors, fostering a culture of collaboration, transparency, and accountability.
  • Chair board meetings, ensuring effective communication, decision-making, and adherence to governance best practices.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of policies and procedures to support the organisation's mission and strategic goals.

Strategic Planning and Oversight:

  • Work with the Board and executive leadership to develop and refine Performance Space's strategic plan, ensuring alignment with the organisation's values and objectives.
  • Monitor organisational performance against strategic goals and objectives, providing guidance and support to address challenges and capitalise on opportunities.
  • Champion initiatives that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within the organisation and the broader arts community.

Financial Stewardship:

  • Collaborate with the Treasurer and Finance Committee to oversee the organisation's financial management, including budgeting, fundraising, and financial reporting.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant financial regulations and ethical standards, safeguarding the organisation's financial integrity and sustainability.
  • Support fundraising efforts by cultivating relationships with donors, sponsors, and funding partners, and advocating for Performance Space's mission and programs.

Advocacy and Community Engagement:

  • Serve as an ambassador for Performance Space, representing the organisation at public events, forums, and stakeholder meetings.
  • Build and nurture strategic partnerships with other arts organisations, government agencies, and community groups to advance Performance Space's goals and enhance its impact.
  • Advocate for the arts and the interests of Performance Space within the local, national, and international arts ecosystems, promoting awareness and support for the organisation's work.

Qualifications:

  • Passion for contemporary performing arts and a commitment to supporting emerging artists and experimental work.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in a non-profit, arts, or cultural organisation, preferably in a governance or board leadership role.
  • Strong strategic thinking and decision-making skills, with the ability to envision and articulate a compelling future for Performance Space.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and inspire diverse stakeholders, including board members, staff, artists, donors, and community members.
  • Financial literacy and experience overseeing organisational finances, including budgeting, financial planning, and fundraising.
  • Knowledge of governance best practices and familiarity with legal and regulatory requirements applicable to arts organisations.
  • A collaborative and inclusive leadership style, with a commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion within the organisation and the broader arts community.
