About

Marcus Whale is a musician and artist working on Gadigal land. He is a member of electronic pop duo Collarbones and club music trio BV (fka Black Vanilla), as well as work under his own name. Primarily forming an electronic world around his singing, these songs navigate diverse sound worlds slipping between pop, club, experimental and contemporary classical music.

In a classical music context, performers including Ensemble Offspring, Synergy Percussion, The Song Company, pianist Zubin Kanga and percussionist Claire Edwardes have performed his compositions locally and internationally. In addition, he has composed for screen (including for Jane Campion’s Top of the Lake) and stage (for choreographer Martin Del Amo, performance artists Jess Olivieri and Ivan Cheng).

In recent years, this practice has expanded to include performance, sound, text and video in a visual art context, with work at Underbelly Arts Festival, Liveworks, Sugar Mountain Festival, Art Month Sydney and The Now Now Festival, as well as club performances. Often produced in collaboration with other artist, Marcus’s works unravel mythologies of queered desire and shame, often utilising the high drama of religious ritual.
