Jamie James
Jamie James (they/them) is a queer documentary photographer living and making on stolen lands, whose practice explores identity and belonging in relationship with queer performance artists, LGBTQIA+ communities, First Peoples and South Sea Islander contemporary culture. James grew up learning from First Nations Mob on Bundjalung country, and their work is grounded in a commitment to consent, truth-sharing, and ethical visual storytelling. They have been documenting life’s edges for over 35 years.
James’s work is held in State, National and International collections, they have a been a finalist in many respected awards.
In 2025, Breathing Archive directed by Victoria Spence, explores collective queer memory, imagination and our shared political histories through archival images, voice and sound.
Jamie published a collection of 30 years of Sydney’s Queer Performance photography in 2021, titled Humans Being through Clouds of Magellan Press.
