About

Deanne Butterworth is a Melbourne-based choreographer and dancer who has been working professionally since 1994. In 2017-2019 she was a studio artist at Gertrude Contemporary and is currently resident artist at Temperance Hall. Her work has been shown for Next Wave Festival, NGV Melbourne Now, Dancehouse, Lucy Guerin Inc. (Pieces for Small Spaces), Melbourne Fringe, Dance New Amsterdam (NYC), Hong Kong Fringe Club (with Jo Lloyd), PAF France, West Space plus more. She has worked with many including choreographers Phillip Adams, Tim Darbyshire, Rebecca Jensen, Shelley Lasica, Shian Law, Jo Lloyd, Sandra Parker, and Brooke Stamp.

Deanne is currently working on Group Furniture (premiering September 2019) and a longer durational work with a large cast referencing a music performance from the 1960s. In 2019 she was nominated for two Green Room Awards- for her years work as a performer, and for the Shirley McKechnie Award for Excellence in Choreography for Remaking Dubbing at Gertrude Glasshouse. 

Recent work includes: FURNITURE Gertrude Contemporary (2018); Remaking Dubbing, Gertrude Glasshouse & Melbourne Art Fair, (2018); Tempo Rubato, (2018); Moving Mapping, a workshop for NGV Triennial Extra, (2018); choreographer & performer for Linda Tegg's Ground video, Venice Architecture Biennale, (2018); Gret, For a Moment, video, Gertrude Contemporary, (2017); Re-enactments Artist-in-Residence, Boyd Studio Southbank (2016); Interlude, Spring 1883, Hotel Windsor (2016), Two Parts of Easy Action, The Substation (2016) and Siteless Now (2014) at NGV both with Evelyn Ida Morris. She has performed in the work of other artists including Belle Bassin, Damiano Bertoli, Bridie Lunney, David Rosetzky, Sally Smart, Linda Tegg, Justene Williams, and Mikala Dwyer. She participated in‘Choreography and the Gallery’ taking place for Biennale of Sydney (2016) and at UNSW (2019).
