Performance Space and Pony Express are seeking special people to volunteer for the Ecosexual Bathhouse!

Ecosexual Bathhouse by Pony Express is an immersive artwork presented by Performance Space at the 2016 Liveworks Festival in Bay 17 of Carriageworks Sydney. In Ecosexual Bathhouse, audience invited to explore the social and psychological landscape of ecology and sexuality. Audiences enter every 15 minutes in groups of eight and roam through a multi-chambered labyrinth, where they are plunged into the world of inter-species sexual signalling. Sprouting from the Eco-Sex Manifesto by Dr Elizabeth Stephens and Annie Sprinkle, ecosexuality is a burgeoning queer identity that positions the environment as an erotic partner. Ecosexual Bathhouse imagines a world where this identity is on the brink of becoming mainstream, where those of green persuasion have a place to express their deepest ecological desires. The bathhouse combines elements of installation, performance and media to create a sensory environment of playful human ecological interactions.

Pony Express is a collaborative body led by playwright and performance maker Ian Sinclair and transdisciplinary artist Loren Kronemyer.  Through their pandrogynous collaborative process, Pony Express work across platforms of media art, live art, group devising methodology and an antidisciplinary approach to create immersive alternate realities.  Their work reflects themes of environment, apocalypse, and the future. They are currently making the world’s first Ecosexual Bathhouse, a multi-chamber walk through labyrinth that plunges participants into the world environmental eroticism, testing the boundaries of evolution and inhibition.

Performance Space is looking for volunteer performers to play the role of ‘bathhouse regulars’ throughout the performance season. They will work with Pony Express to develop their own performance repertoire to facilitate interactions between the audience and installations in the space.

The ‘regular’ is a seasoned bathhouse attendee who is familiar with the space and knows their own Ecosexual preferences. They may have a special affinity for a particular eco friend, like plants, water, air, or dirt, or perhaps they are an all-rounder. They have read the Eco-Sex Manifesto by Beth Stephens and Annie Sprinkle, and they have gone all the way with exploring their own personal eco-fantasies. In the bathhouse, the Regular comes to hang out, explore, and enact their interpretation of Ecosexuality. This can involve times of casual conversation and interaction with other patrons, or an introverted solo exploration or a casual voyeur. The Regulars set a fun example for the newcomers of what is acceptable and give a sense of reality and history to the bathhouse.

Installations include: a pollination room where pollen is lovingly and manually moved between flowers; a lounge area featuring interactive bathtubs that contain an aquatic pond, a worm farm / glory hole; a dressing table full of ecosexy accessories; an ecoporno screening room; a sauna containing a sound installation; and a room containing a big bed in a ‘love dungeon’ of plants.

We encourage Regulars to interact with all installations to the fullest of their expression in collaboration with the Co-Creators – this can mean bringing in your own movement, your own style of discourse, or any other form of presence. If comfortable, nudity is encouraged. Respect of other patrons, plants, performers, and the installation is a must. Anyone, any age can apply – we are LGBTQI2S friendly.
