Based in Manila, Philippines, Yason Banal is a prolific artist as well as a curator and academic who has exhibited widely across Asia and Europe. Currently a featured artist in the 8th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (Queensland Art Gallery / Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane) Banal’s work fuses a multitude of artistic disciplines and perspectives, unraveling real and virtual spaces, power, gender, voyeurism and sexuality.
For Day for Night: 24HRS, Banal will create a new immersive installation that will captivate visitors to the Saturday night Day for Night party. UNTITLED_SUNSET will be a cinematic installation of cars, playing a faint symphony of specially-recorded songs and words from friends, colleagues and strangers. From torch songs of love and loss and dance tunes of joy and courage, to spoken memories, protests and hopes amidst contemporary life, UNTITLED_SUNSET will create an atmospheric place of reflection, contemplation and vision alongside the frenetic buzz of the Day for Night party.
Yason Banal, artist statement: “THE WORK IS INSPIRED BY CINEMA (WONG KAR WAI’S HAPPY TOGETHER), MUSIC (DAVID BOWIE’S LET’S DANCE), LITERATURE (VERSO BOOK OF PROTESTS AND SCI LOW FI) AND RITUAL (PARTY BREAKS, CRUISING, MUSIC TRIPPING, JOY RIDES, VAGRANCY, SUNSET WATCHING, ONLINE SURFING).”
ABOUT YASON BANAL [PHILIPPINES]:
Yason Banal’s work is drawn to the deep structure of the global image, the kind that circulates translocally and survives translation, and so is misrecognized as coherent, or coherently universal. It is not, however, the image in the fullness of its conceit that intrigues; it is how it is made to cohere, to come together through bits and pieces of its inevitable but repressed dispersal, in other words, the abstraction of its nature as thing, its motif, the reductive condition of its appearance, and the instances or the intervals at which it fails to hold and therefore exfoliates like design so sleek it belies its surplus.
-Patrick Flores, All of the For
Yason Banal’s work moves between photography, video, installation, text and performance, taking myriad forms and conceptual strategies in order to explore and refract, perhaps even trigger, suppressed links and critical fictions among seemingly divergent systems. He obtained a BA in Film at the University of the Philippines, an MFA in Fine Art at Goldsmiths-University of London, residencies at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam and AIT in Tokyo, and visiting lectureships at London Metropolitan University and Tokyo National University of Fine Arts. His works have been shown at the Tate, Frieze Art Fair, IFA Berlin, Oslo Kunsthall, Singapore Biennale, Shanghai Biennale, Christie’s, Queens Museum of Art and Cultural Center of the Philippines. Recent projects include Bangkok Art and Culture Center, Center for Contemporary Art (Singapore), Museum of Contemporary Art and Design (Manila), Garage Museum of Contemporary Art (Moscow) and Queensland Museum of Art (Brisbane).
