THE MOMENT OF DISAPPEARANCE
A sound and video installation tracing the hidden histories of displacement and violence on Australian and international island sites
PRESENTED BY PERFORMANCE SPACE
THURS 6 – SAT 29 NOV
10AM – 6PM
The Moment of Disappearance is an immersive landscape of sound and video that traces legacies of the Enlightenment to their colonial manifestation in Australia. Large-scale photographic projections of contentious terrains are shrouded with yards of fabric and set to an imposing sound score composed by Cat Hope and performed by the London Improvisers Orchestra.
Visual artist Kate McMillan will beguile Sydney audiences with a remarkable installation that unveils the intertwining histories of imprisonment and banishment linked to island sites of Port Arthur and Wadjemup/Rottnest Island, as well as the Greek island of Pontikonisi. Coupling concealed histories with hidden sound, The Moment of Disappearance is a multi-sensory exploration of an unexamined past and one man’s descent into madness.
