Stephen Cummins Bequest: Queer performance residency – Phil Soliman
Stephen Cummins Bequest: Queer Performance residents announced!
Week 2: Phil Soliman
Mentor: Victoria Spence
Dates: 30 May to 4 June 2016
Phil Soliman is a Sydney-based multidisciplinary artist interested in truth and subjectivity. Drawing on his experience as a gay man from a Christian Egyptian family, Soliman examines systems of belief in religious, political and educational contexts with warmth and humour. His practice spans drawing, performance, photography, video, sound, installation and digital media.
Soliman graduated from RMIT University with a Master of Fine Arts (with Distinction) in 2013. He currently works as a video editor in Sydney.
Phil will combine elements of Coptic Orthodox ritual and the violent riot that occurred at a football match in Egypt in 2012, to explore how masculinity, violence and homophobia operate in sport, politics, and religion. He will create a durational interactive performance that considers Egypt’s post-revolutionary environment of sectarian, militaristic and sport-related violence, as well as the Egyptian government’s practical banning of homosexuality. Phil will work with his mentor to investigate how elements of ritual can be used to elicit audience participation.
