Stephen Cummins Bequest: Queer performance residents announced!
Week 3: Embittered Swish

Embittered Swish is the most recent vessel for the artistic relationships between Mick Klepner Roe (director/performance maker), Kai Bradley (actor/physical theatre maker) and Cinnamon Templeton (tarot reader/academic). Mick directed Kai at the VCA in late 2015 in a scene study; this was the beginning of their exploration into different ways of leading and following. Cinnamon and Mick have been making work together since late 2014, performing under the name ‘4skns R Flwrs’ at Northcote Town Hall and For Fanny’s Sake in Melbourne. These early shows were inspired by Jean Genet’s ‘Our Lady of the Flowers’, which Cinnamon was then writing a minor thesis about, as well as Lindsay Kemp’s dramatic interpretation of the novel, Flowers. Mick also took an intense interest in the book, eventually bringing Kai and Cinnamon together in late 2015 in order to work from it. Embittered Swish embodies a radical departure from previous working methods, and its ongoing development aims at standing alone beside Genet’s work.
Departing from Jean Genet’s Our Lady of the Flowers, a slippery series of trans operations, this collective of Mick Klepner Roe, Cinnamon Templeton and Kai Bradley will develop a process of trans dramaturgy that luxuriates in ‘in-betweeness’ rather than culmination. They want to engage performative modes where the audience is invited to participate, while simultaneously exploring dynamics of denial, exclusion and guilt. Embittered Swish will work with their mentor to challenge audience responses and their own methods of embodiment/coming out.
