Stephen Cummins Bequest: Queer performance residency – Chad McLachlan

Stephen Cummins Bequest: Queer performance residents announced!

Week 1: Chad McLachlan

Mentor: Dr Julie-Anne Long

Dates: 9 to 14 May

Chad McLachlan, originally from Bathurst NSW, graduated from the VCA in 2015 with a BFA (Dance). He trained in theatre from a young age, before moving over to dance. Since then, he has also taken up working with music and film. Chads choreographic works often look at human interaction and the barriers and agents that affect this. Past/Current works include DEPTH RECEPTION,  a development happening as part of a residency at Testing Grounds in Melbourne, MOVERS DIGEST, a performance installation developed at the VCA, and Backroom Angels, an early development of ideas in HardQueer DeathPony. Performance credits include; Rebecca Jensen – Pose Band (Melbourne Fringe 2015), Catherine Ryan and Amy Spiers – No More Public Space, Only Public Order (MOFO2016), Chloe Chignell – Soft Reality (2016) Shian Law – Fucking Interracially Is My Contribution To World Peace (development 2016).

During his residency, Chad will develop a performance installation HardQueer DeathPony exploring the contradictions within binary definitions of gender. Chad will create a liminal space where the audience become participants in a conversation about the alignment of masculinity and femininity within individual bodies through live performance, video and sound. Chad hopes to work with his mentor develop strategies for creating community engagement through dance.
