PIA VAN GELDER
PRESENTED BY PERFORMANCE SPACE AND CARRIAGEWORKS
THU 7 AUG – SUN 7 SEPT
10AM – 6PM DAILY
Psychic Synth is an immense audio-visual environment incorporating projection, light and surround sound that is coaxed to life by the mental power of a single viewer. Each viewer’s brainwaves are tapped into through the use of an EEG headset, triggering an immersive biofeedback loop that envelops the audience.
Stepping into the confines of Carriageworks’ Bay 19, the audience will encounter a darkened space illuminated only by the faint glow of a technological apparatus beneath a vast circular screen. To breathe Psychic Synth into life, the viewer must put the headset on, and adopt a relaxed posture and a meditative state: the deeper you go, the wilder the ride.
Responding to neural impulses picked up by the headset, lights, sound and projections are activated and combine to create a live visual rendering of consciousness, creating a psychedelic portrait of our complex inner-workings.
Psychic Synth is the first major solo exhibition by Sydney-based electronic artist Pia van Gelder.
