NULA NURA 2015
Indigenous Arts Lab on Cockatoo Island
22 – 31 May 2015
The Nula Nura Indigenous Arts Lab is a new project developed in partnership with the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust.
The laboratory will provide a development opportunity for emerging and mid-career Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander visual artists who are ready to conceive of larger scale and visible outcomes for their practice. Eight local artists have been selected to participate in an intensive 10-day residency.
Nula Nura will be facilitated by renowned Aboriginal artists Djon Mundine OAM and Andrea James. Participants will be mentored by leading Aboriginal senior artists through conceptual, design and devising processes for installing and presenting site-specific interdisciplinary art on Cockatoo Island. Nula Nura will be an immersive residency that involves camping on the island for the 10-days.
The Lab will take place from 22 May – 31 May 2015 around historically significant sites at Cockatoo Island, Sydney. On Saturday 30 May, 3-6PM, the Nula Nura artists will open the doors to their studios around Cockatoo Island and share with you their works-in-progress developed during their time on the island while in residence.
Andrea James & Djon Mundine OAM
Ghenoa Gela, Kim Hill, Willurai Kirkbright, Colin Kinchela, Caroline Oakley, Lucy Simpson and Bjorn Stewart.
OPEN STUDIO: Saturday 30 May, 3 – 6PM
The works-in-progress will be located at various sites around the Island and most will run continuously throughout the afternoon. There will be detailed maps available as you arrive on the Island. You are welcome to take a self-guided tour of the works. We recommend that you leave at least an hour to make your way around the Island and see all the works.
Guided tours will also be available. Timings of the tours will be released closer to the date. Please check the Performance Space website for more information.
About Cockatoo Island
Cockatoo Island is located on Sydney Harbour, about a 20-minute ferry ride from Circular Quay. The former industrial site has occasional uneven surfaces and is exposed to the elements, therefore we recommend you wear sturdy shoes and come prepared for inclement weather. The showings will proceed regardless of wet weather.
The easiest way to get to/from Cockatoo Island is via ferry. Ferry timetables can be located at www.transportnsw.info.
Please note: The work-in-progress showings coincide with Vivid Sydney 2015 and we expect Circular Quay to be particularly congested in the evening. Please plan your trip and allow additional travel time to reach Cockatoo Island.
