For one weekend in May, the small parks that dot inner-Sydney’s Surry Hills will be transformed into jaw-dropping outdoor galleries, with free contemporary art installations and performances in Micro Parks, presented as part of Performance Space: PSpace Social.

Artists Joan Ross, Ensemble Offspring, Justin Shoulder, Fondue Set, and Malcolm Whittaker will all stake their claim on tiny patches of greenery around Surry Hills to create free, family-friendly works. Some will be interactive, some immersive and others performative, but all will make art public, accessible, and fun.

Micro Parks was last staged in Erskineville as part of Sydney Festival 2013 and was enjoyed by over 6000 people. Now, it’s Surry Hills’ turn. Five of Australia’s most exciting visual and performing artists transform public parks into creative wonderlands. Adventure playgrounds will become colourful monsters, enormous wind-powered musical instruments will appear, long-lost dogs will be remembered, hi-vis fences will float in mid-air, and women and their babies will dance through time and space.

Designed to run throughout the day, Micro Parks allows the audience to wander from park to park taking in the installations at your own pace, or discovering performances as they appear. Pick up or download the PSpace Social map, as Surry Hills becomes alive with public art that proves every space is a Performance Space.

City of Sydney is the Major Partner for MICRO PARKS.

Possession is 9/10th of the law: Please keep off the grass by Joan Ross

An artist working with contemporary and colonial historical Australian images and iconography, Joan Ross will bring to life real-size symbols from her recent work with high visibility fluorescent yellow. In a work that combines play with protest, the picket fence becomes invader.

MICROPARK: Wimbo Park, Bourke St & Devonshire St, Surry Hills
    DATE: FRI 16 – SUN 18 MAY
    TIME: 12PM-5PM

  • Calliope’s Nest by Ensemble Offspring

Sydney’s champions of innovative new music, Ensemble Offspring, will create musical objects that are given voice by the wind alone. These objects become an Aeolian harp (played by the wind) murmuring gently to the birds. In performance they become instruments, forming a bizarre ritual that both exalts and interferes with nature. To be enjoyed up close, or at a distance.

MICROPARK: Cooper St Reserve, Riley St Surry Hills
    DATE: FRI 16 – SUN 18 MAY
TIME: 1PM-5PM (performances on the hour)

  • Three in the Bush by The Fondue Set

The Fondue Set (Retrospectacle, No Success Like Failure) will create a cycle of solo works to investigate what the Fondue Set looks like in 2014: We will dance. Just us. No guests. Just babies. Maybe a few babies from time to time.

MICROPARK: Fred Miller Reserve, Bourke St
    DATE: FRI 16 – SUN 18 MAY
TIME: 12.30PM-4.30PM (performances on the half hour)

  • 1001 Baddies by Justin Shoulder

Justin Shoulder (Day for Night, The River Eats) will transform an adventure playground into a fantastical, interactive creature using an array of objects, costumes and props. The everyday playground will become an out-of-this world space where every narrative is possible.

MICROPARK: Arthur St Park, Arthur St Surry Hills
    DATE: FRI 16 – SUN 18 MAY
    TIME: 12PM-5PM

  • My Best Friend by Malcolm Whittaker

A performative walk in memory of beloved but departed pet dogs, inspired by the passing of the Whittaker family’s Winnie. The lives of these loved and lost animal friends will be honoured through the walking ritual that used to be shared between the dogs and their humans.

MICROPARK: Ward Park, Devonshire St & Marlborough St, Surry Hills
    DATE: SAT 17 – SUN 18 MAY
    TIME: 4PM
