The most distinctive artists of the Eastern Torres Strait – The Australian

Acclaimed Torres Strait Islander artist, Ken Thaiday Snr, presents a major new installation at Carriageworks, accompanied by a series of traditional dance works choreographed by the artist and performed by Torres Strait Islander dance troupe Erub Kebile. The centerpiece of the exhibition is a sculpture emblematic of the Dhari, a traditional headdress found only in the Torres Strait. The four metre tall structure – with moving components that make up Thaiday’s dynamic “dance machines” – is accompanied by two new pieces alongside existing works that pay homage to the artist’s family totem.

Inspired by the landscape of the Torres Strait and the importance of family, faith and culture, Thaiday’s work explores the intersection of traditional lore with contemporary life. The installation will showcase the range of the artists’ works, traversing dance, installation and kinetic sculpture as he blends traditional customs with modern materials to tell the stories of communities whose culture is inseparable from the land and life of the Torres Strait.
