Sydney’s acclaimed interdisciplinary artist Jess Olivieri, whose work has recently been seen at the Gallery of Modern Art (Brisbane); Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (Sydney) and the Vrystaat Festival in Bloemfontein, South Africa, is a master of collaboration and a fearless experimenter across artistic disciplines. This year, Olivieri has been specially commissioned by Performance Space to create meditations on queer embodiment, for the opening and closing hours of Day for Night: 24 HRS.

Created in collaboration with Finnish artist Anni Puolakka, two video performances will bookend the frenetic activity of Day for Night, and will encourage participants into a reflective, exploratory state. Delving into the universal themes of sex and death respectively, Olivieri and Puolakka’s work will encourage deep reflection about what it means to experience the world – and ourselves – through a queer lens.

ABOUT JESS OLIVIERI [SYDNEY] & ANNI PUOLAKKA:

Jess and Anni met in 2015 at the Piet Zwart Institute (Rotterdam, NL) which Anni currently attends and where Jess undertook an exchange for her PhD at Sydney University.

Jess Olivieri creates work that span performance, sound, video, dance and photography, with a practice that investigates the social and cultural factors that influence how we inhabit public space collectively and individually. Jess is co-founder with Hayley Forward of the Parachutes for Ladies, showing at GOMA, Campbeltown Art Centre’s, MCA, ACCA as well as international projects in South Africa, Chile and the Netherlands.

Anni Puolakka makes performances, videos and installations in which situation-specific and biographical material are incorporated into fictional worlds. Anni’s works play with the boundaries and potential of humans, understood as ‘bodyminds’ who seek meaningful and vibrant involvement with other beings, objects and surroundings. Her performance projects, often collaborative, have been presented at the Baltic Circle International Theater Festival (Helsinki), IDEAS CITY festival by New Museum (NYC), Art Metropole (Toronto) and TENT (Rotterdam).

Jess Olivieri has collaborated with Performance Space on a number of occasions in recent years, most recently:

  • I Am An Island, a performance commissioned for Performance Space’s 2013 Sydney Festival project Micro Parks.
  • As a commissioned artist in the 2012 SEXES

This work sees Jess collaborating with Finnish artist Anni Puolakka for the first time.
