Jon Rose: Australia made extraordinary. REAL TIME

One of Australia’s most original musical makers and thinkers… [Rose’s] words and actions have frequently challenged and expanded our sense of the nature of Australia’s musical heritage. ABC RADIO

The evening’s most ambitious work, improvisations of rapid jump-cut editing and sped-up footage, the most audacious inspired music.
THE NEW YORK TIMES

Composed by new music pioneer Jon Rose, Ghan Tracks sits somewhere between a musical performance, an installation, live radio, and a spectacular multi-media event. Inspired by the iconic rail trip of the same name, it is above all a meditation on the notion of progress that underscores the Australian story: with all its assumptions, optimism, and failures.

Featuring original film footage of The Afghan Express (the rail line stretching from Adelaide to Darwin), Ghan Tracks is performed by members from two of Australia’s top new music ensembles – Ensemble Offspring and Speak Percussion, with actors working in collaboration with ABC RN’s Creative Audio Unit, which has commissioned a radiophonic version of the performance for Soundproof, to be broadcast in early 2015.

Composer/Multi-media/Texts/Conductor: Jon Rose
Musicians: Claire Edwardes, Clayton Thomas, Eugene Ughetti,
Jennifer Torrence, Lamorna Nightingale, Jason Noble, Carolyn Johns
Performers: Lucy Bell and Patrick Dickson
Sound and Lighting Design: Aaron Clarke

Ghan Tracks was commissioned by Ensemble Offspring in conjunction with Performance Space and is supported by the ABC RN’s Creative Audio Unit.
