DAY FOR NIGHT 2017
PRESENTED BY PERFORMANCE SPACE, SYDNEY GAY AND LESBIAN MARDI GRAS AND CARRIAGEWORKS
SATURDAY 28 OCT 2017, 12pm – 12am
Day for Night is back! Our much-loved collision of queer performance and party culture returns in 2017 with a specially-curated edition to celebrate the closing weekend of Liveworks.
This year, Day for Night will bring together a host of Australia’s finest queer artists, performers, DJs, musicians, freaks and lovers in a glorious fusion of club culture, contemporary art and new performance. Beginning as a series of entrancing performance and video works that unfold over the afternoon, Day for Night slowly but surely evolves into Sydney’s most spectacular queer art party, meshing together the performance space and the dancefloor under the musical genius of legendary Sydney DJs Stereogamous.
Day for Night celebrates artists of diverse backgrounds and cultures, revelling in the brilliant, essential perspectives they bring to our world. See you on the dancefloor, lovers!
DAY FOR NIGHT ARTISTS INCLUDE…
JO LLOYD & SHIAN LAW
WITH TINA HAVELOCK STEVENS
Contemporary dancers Jo Lloyd and Shian Law will team up with artist and drummer Tina Havelock Stevens to present a raw, stripped-back music and dance performance that draws on the artists’ naked bodies and intense, relentless choreography to explore themes of exposure, intimacy, shame and concealment in relation to the human form.
MARCUS WHALE & ATHENA THEBUS
Experimental musician and vocalist Marcus Whale will collaborate with visual artist Athena Thebus to create a new song cycle that explores the mythical figure of Lucifer—a persona that crosses cultural and religious borders—and his potential to be reclaimed as a queer icon.
Salote Tawale will continue her expanded series of self-portraits, revisiting an awkward moment of birthday celebration through a series of performances, live-feed video projections, and interventions into the party.
Nicole Barakat will invoke a pantheon of forgotten goddesses – known for their embodiment of power, desire and sexuality over the centuries – through a series of performances that range from the meditative to the participatory. Drawing on Barakat’s practice of creating intricately-detailed textile sculptures through social interactions, this work will accumulate into an immersive installation within the Day for Night party.
Bhenji Ra will continue her powerful investigations into the racially-charged borders of personal, public and gendered space. Infiltrating the event with a crew of dancers, the collective will carve up the Day for Night spaces through subtle and bombastic choreographic moments.
Visual artist Gareth Ernst will invite members of Day for Night audience to disrobe, to have their portraits drawn live in the space. These portraits will be projected live and large as they are being drawn, contrasting with the intimacy and vulnerability of the drawing process itself.
Paul Mac will give a special concert of his brand new composition, immersing the audience in waves of electronic music with visuals by Damian Barbeler.
Stereogamous (Jonny Seymour and Paul Mac) will once again bring the music to Day for Night, working with the artists to build the sonic scores for their work and DJing the party to bring maximum dancefloor joy.
The Day for Night party will also feature guest appearances by DJ Gemma, Josie Baker, Miss Ellaneous, Froyo, Brendan Maclean and visuals by Hannah Bronte.
Please note that Day for Night is 18+. May include flashing lights, loud music, and nudity.
