Sydney-based artist Cigdem Aydemir has become celebrated for her charged, provocative performances, installations and video work. Equally humorous, critical and political, Aydemir’s work explores the power dynamics of contemporary culture and has a particular interest in representations of Islam and the image of the veiled woman.
For Day for Night: 24HRS, Aydemir will create a new performance and video series that applies the icons and tropes of Western hair and beauty culture to the figure of the veiled woman. Taking place throughout the Day for Night weekend, What If I Curl My Veil? And Other Questions will see Aydemir atop a specially-constructed plinth inside an installation of screens, performing a specially-conceived beauty routine that is at one absurd, glamorous and provocative.
ABOUT CIGDEM AYDEMIR [SYDNEY]:
Cigdem Aydemir is a Sydney-based artist working in the mediums of installation, performance and video art. Her socially and politically engaged art practice investigates possibilities for intersubjective and transcultural communication with an interest in post-colonial and feminist issues.
Much of her work expands on the veil as a culturally constructed site and as material realisation, while exploring the veiled woman cipher as resistant female other and as lived experience. Through critiquing, decolonizing and queering mechanisms, Cigdem questions established relations of power, while producing work that is driven equally by research, play, criticism and humour.
Cigdem was the 2013 recipient of the Redlands Konica Minolta Art Prize, in the Emerging Artist category, and the Edna Ryan Award for Creative Feminism in 2012. She has exhibited both nationally and internationally receiving support and opportunities from Australia Council for the Arts, Arts NSW, Ian Potter Cultural Trust, Freedman Foundation (Travelling Arts Scholarship), Performance Space (Sydney), Salamanca Arts Centre (Hobart), and Vryfees (South Africa).
Cigdem Aydemir was last seen at Performance Space in the celebrated 2012 exhibition SEXES, where she covered an entire passageway at Carriageworks in a giant burqa.
Other notable recent projects include Plastic Histories, where Aydemir shink-wrapped a series of historical statues and monuments in the South African city of Bloemfontein in hot pink plastic: http://www.cigdemaydemir.net/plastic_histories.html
